Dear Love,
There are a lot of reasons why we are obsessed with hustling; fear of failure, the constant need to be busy, needing more money, trying to break generational curses, etc. However, what have you kept for yourself? Shouldn’t you give the very best of yourself to yourself?
Many of us are still hunkering down right now and following clear factual instructions to stay safe during the pandemic. You may not have access to the same outlets you had pre-2020 and that can begin to make everyday feel, well, ‘blah’. This is leading many of us to lose ourselves in mundane activities instead of finding activities that bring us joy for the sake of our own joy.
I’m guilty of this so I’m not here to call you out. One of my favorite hobbies is planning. Yes, planning. Now, more of a creative approach by decorating and crafting spreads, but it’s still centered around my compulsive need to have plans, schedules, and an impressive to-do list, but my life has gotten so hectic that I don’t even take the time to plan anymore – I just react.
Dragonfly out in the sun, you know what I mean, don’t you know; Butterflies all havin’ fun, you know what I mean; Sleep in peace when day is done, that’s what I mean; And this old world is a new world

I realized I don’t have a hobby that I can use as an escape that isn’t somehow attached to wanting to further my career or my vision for my life. Lately, I’ve been reflecting, and I’m actually jealous of those who have hobbies. Activities they enjoy for the sake of enjoyment. Not to make a profit, not a way out, but a purely enjoyable activity because they like it and want to do it.
Don’t get me wrong, I do have pastimes. I’m sure you do too; such as watching TV, listening to music, cooking casually, and becoming a plant parent.
I’ve asked around, and quite a few of my friends, especially my Black woman tribe, all admitted to battling the feelings of depression and anxiety during this time of COVID-19. I asked a follow-up question about a hobby without the hustle, and most didn’t have one.
A few said makeup was a hobby, but after more discussion, we realized it was rooted in the need to present themselves as attractive and well put together.
Love, if you need something for yourself you need a hobby without a hustle. I can’t tell you what that hobby should be. Honestly, I haven’t figured out one for myself. As much as I hate to admit it, every other idea presents itself as a new hustle.
Love, if you have a hobby you keep for yourself, keep up the great work! Seriously, I’m in awe of you. Love, if you don’t have it figured out, let’s brainstorm together. (Maybe that’s the issue, too much brainstorming?)
It’s a new dawn; It’s a new day; It’s a new life For me; And I’m feeling good
